Sources and limits

This table describes what the software can access. It does not guarantee complete, current, or official legal-source coverage.

A2AJ Canadian legal dataThird-party aggregation; not an official reproductionCanada, OntarioDecisions · Ontario and federal legislation discovery · Metadata · Unofficial text where suppliedAvailable when the source is onlineNormally availableCoverage is the dataset list reported by A2AJ at runtime. All reproductions are unofficial and require official-source checking. Court, date, language, text, and treatment coverage may be incomplete. No comprehensive noting-up claim.

Historical-version retrieval is not enabled until an official stable interface is validated.

A historical answer requires an explicit archived version and cannot be inferred from the current repository.

Coverage, opinion text, and citation verification depend on CourtListener and configured credentials.
CanLII bring-your-own-key metadata connector boundaryEach user must obtain their own CanLII API key and comply with the access granted to themCanada, OntarioEntitlement-defined metadata or textNot yet availableOff unless you set it upROSS does not scrape CanLII and supplies no shared access. CanLII's documented API exposes collection metadata, not decision full text. The rest of ROSS remains usable without a CanLII key; unavailable coverage must be disclosed.

Optional CourtListener access

Use your own CourtListener key

CourtListener is separate from CanLII. First create a CourtListener account, then open its API-token page to get your key. Paste it into the CourtListener field on the ROSS Account → API keys page.

CourtListener mainly covers U.S. material. ROSS does not provide or share a CourtListener key.

Optional CanLII access

Ask CanLII for your own API key

ROSS works without a CanLII key, but connecting your own authorized key can make Canadian legal research more useful. Ask CanLII for access through its feedback page. If CanLII gives you a key, paste it into the CanLII field on the ROSS Account → API keys page. ROSS does not provide a shared key or scrape CanLII.

01

Decisions

A2AJ can help find Canadian decisions and may provide unofficial text. CourtListener can be used for U.S. research. A personal CanLII API key can make Canadian research more useful, but CanLII controls what the key allows. ROSS does not scrape CanLII.

02

Legislation

ROSS can search Ontario e-Laws and federal Justice Laws and show the official link and available date information. Older versions may be limited.

03

Later treatment

ROSS may not find every later decision that considered a case. A search result does not prove that a case is still good law.
